String Quartet No. 8 (2002) by Gloria Coates is a 15-minute work in three movements:
- I. On Wings of Sound II.
- "In Falling Timbers Buried"
- III. Prayer
It was commissioned for the 50th European Weeks Passau "For a Europe and a World of Freedom, Peace, and Friendship" to commemorate the September 11th tragedy.
The first movement, On Wings of Sound, is music in contemplation before the confrontation. The title of the second, "In Falling Timbers Buried", is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson for which Gloria Coates had once composed the music. Fragments of this composition are used in the movement. The third movement is a Prayer for peace and humanity.
String Quartet No. 8 was first performed on June 20, 2002, in Passau, Germany, by the Henschel Quartet.
