SUMMER EVENING is the first in a set of three short descriptive pieces (THREE SMALL TONE POEMS) for orchestra by Frederick Delius (1862-1934). Composed in 1890, it was not heard in concert until Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the premiere at the Delius Festival in 1946. Like many of his works, it eschews narrative for evocative mood setting which he encouraged listeners to interpret as they wish. Instrumentation: 3 (3rd d. Picc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
