The work was first performed in October of 1907 in Leeds Town Hall as part of the Leeds Triennial Music Festival, with Vaughan Williams himself conducting. Dedicated to his sister-in-law, Toward the Unknown Region put Vaughan Williams on the map as a new and important voice in English music.
