Connesson's Trois Chimeres (Three Dreams) is inspired by a set of poems by Gerard de Nerval and are a widely different cycle. From the mournful opening movement to the driving finale (interrupted only by an intensely lyrical passage, says the composer), Connesson sets the stage for an advanced cellist in the center spotlight. Trois Chimeres is dedicated to the French cellist Jerome Pernoo, who premiered the work in 2014. Pernoo was also the dedicatee of Connesson's earlier Concerto for Cello and Orchestra.
