Frederick Fox (1931-2011) acquired both his master's degree in music (1957) and doctoral degree in music composition (1959) from Indiana University, then began an odyssey that carried him to various teaching and foundation posts around the United States. Fox notes that his music “continued to break down the diatonic structure to make it more chromatic” but that he “doesn't consider tonality when composing.” Upon the Reedy Stream is a perfect example of his style, incorporating chromatic lines and other non-diatonic tonal languages.
