The villancico, popular song and dance of Spanish medieval villagers, was cultivated during the Renaissance by court poets and musicians, in whose hands it attained the grace and elegance of an exact art.
These pieces were taken from the Cancionero de Uppsala, the oldest existing manuscript of Spanish secular music. It was printed in Venice in 1556.
