Vivaldi wrote more than sixty pieces for string orchestra in four parts: two violins, viola/ cello and basses. He called most of them simply concerto - even though there are no soloists - and three of them (singly) concerto ripieno. (Ripieno means full, indicating the body of the orchestra rather than any soloist or solo section.)
