When Wagner set about writing a new commission for the Ciompi String Quartet, her initial thoughts were of "dignity and gravitas." In the course of the composition, however, the music became "whimsical and nostalgic," reminding her of nothing more than her mother's childhood home in Tioga County (PA). For those unfamiliar with the Endless Mountains of northern Pennsylvania, her six movements will impart visions: Damsel Fly, Rock Run, Bug, Milkweed (memento mori), Mad Bramble, and Little Church in Nauvoo.
