This is lively music characterized by upward leaps of octaves. The intent is to depict that boundless energy we associate with youth! The opening measures are marked�jagged, with gathering energy as the ensemble sets off on a playful journey. Then, as the work unfolds, there are several interruptions to the main theme -- once in a sprightly 6/8 dalliance, and once in a melodic and reflective passage. This slower section ends with bird calls in the upper winds. Yet, because the fun-loving spirit of the work prevails, the opening theme always returns in one guise or another.
