Anton (or Antonin, or Antoine) Reicha was born in Prague, on February 26, 1770. He was an influential theorist, but is perhaps best known today for his substantial contribution to the wind quintet literature. He settled in Paris in 1808, and was appointed professor of counterpoint and fugue at the Paris Conservatory in 1818. Many who would become notable composers studied under Reicha, including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Charles Gounod, and (briefly) Cesar Franck. Reicha died in Paris on May 28, 1836.
