2 Celebres Arias (Bach and Handel).
for Violin and Piano.
Eugène Ysaye.
Preface Note
In Auguste Wilhelmij's transcription, the tonality of this Bach aria is not respected : it is pitched one tone lower soleley that the melody can fall in with the proper notes of the key of C on the fourth string. But, whilst recognizing the value of the transcription from the instrumental point of view, it seemed to me that it caused the aria to lose its religious and mystic nature - the more so in that the whole piece is played in the bass without the melody being taken even once in its original clef.
The new adaptation I propse, re-establishing the D major tonality, brings the melody into the higer octave after it has first been set out on the G string - tuned to A - with the C major fingering that favours it.
This is how I have always played this superb aria. The artist will choose.
E. YSAYE,
N.B. - Take care to raise the G to the natural A a little higher than the diapason, if the string has not been prepared in advnace on a spare instrument - which is preferable.
